How to attract the best employees to your small business

As a small business owner, attracting and retaining the best employees for your business can seem like quite a chore. If you don’t have or can’t afford a HR department or a recruitment agency, this process is even more daunting. It’s not impossible, though! You can still recruit excellent employees to your company, in fact, with the current turnover rates that a lot of big companies have, there are a lot of people seeking jobs with smaller companies.

With the right incentives, you can also attract people away from the big companies. It’s going to seem like a daunting process, but it is possible. As long as you can lay out exactly what you have to offer that the big company doesn’t, then you stand a good chance. You have many options available, so make sure you are utilising as many as you can!

Network with other small businesses in your area

Creating a network of other small businesses in your area, whether it’s face to face or online, can help all of you thrive. They may get applicants that are better suited to your company, which they can then send your way, and vice versa. Another option is networking with a dedicated recruiter who will work to give you exactly what you are looking for.  You get the benefit of people who know exactly what you offer and are already interested.

Look into creating a benefits program

This may seem a bit daunting right at first, especially when you are just starting out and may only have a couple of employees. As your business grows and you recruit more people, getting a benefit package in place will help you retain your current employees and bring new ones in. Taking care of your employees and keeping them healthy is key to keeping them happy.

Remember what you already offer

A lot of small businesses are a bit more like family than a corporation, and people love that environment. Flexibility is also a big key for people. Working their schedules around other needs or maybe offering telecommuting is a huge bonus for a lot of people these days.

Perks!

Don’t forget your employee perks!

  • Holidays
  • Sick days
  • Personal days
  • Company events
  • Bonuses

Sure, you might not have a big gym in your building, but this is where networking with those other small businesses can come in handy. You could work out a discount at a local gym, or special prices at a local restaurant. Paired with something like gift cards, this would be a great perk! Reward your employees for great work with ideas like this, or even quarterly bonuses, whatever works best for your business (while keeping in mind the potential Fringe Benefits Tax implications). Take care of them, and they’ll take care of you!
